Boudoir comes from the French word for a woman's private dressing room or bedroom, a space set aside for privacy and reflection. The term carried into photography in the twentieth century to describe portraits made in that same intimate, private register, meant for the person being photographed, not for public display. That history still shapes the genre today: a boudoir session is built around privacy first, and the resulting images belong entirely to the client.
Who Is Boudoir Photography For?
Anyone. Clients book boudoir sessions to mark a milestone birthday, celebrate a body they've worked hard to reconnect with, process a breakup or a healing journey, surprise a partner, or simply because they're ready to see themselves clearly. How Is Boudoir Different From Glamour or Pinup Photography?
The three styles are often grouped together, but each has a different focus. Glamour photography is typically built around a polished, editorial look meant to be shared or published. Pinup photography draws on a specific mid-century visual style: retro wardrobe, playful posing, and a recognizable aesthetic. Boudoir photography is neither performance nor throwback. It is a private portrait style centered on the client's own story, comfort, and body, made for an audience of one, or for the Couples and Group Experiences, for the people in the photographs themselves.
What Happens During a Session?
A typical Ishtar's Image Experience begins with professional hair and makeup, followed by a guided, coached photoshoot in a private studio setting. A documentary photographer captures behind-the-scenes footage throughout, so the day itself becomes part of your keepsake. Sessions are collaborative: your photographer directs posing and movement, but the wardrobe, mood, and pace are yours.
What Should I Wear to a Boudoir Session?
There is no required uniform. Some clients bring lingerie in colors or styles they have always wanted to be photographed in, others prefer an oversized shirt, a favorite robe, or nothing prepared at all, since professional hair and makeup and wardrobe guidance are included in every session. What Do You Receive Afterward?
Every Individuals, Couples, and Group Experience includes a fully edited digital gallery, a behind-the-scenes boudoir video, and a Treasure Box, a photo album, matching keepsake box, USB drive, and polaroid prints.
Is Boudoir Photography Private?
Yes. Your images are never shared, published, or added to a public portfolio without your explicit consent. Discretion is built into every step of the process, from your first inquiry through delivery of your final gallery.
